Board Game

Post by Username17 »

I'm new to the whole torrenting thing. So here's my first attempt:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4917611

Yes, the game is seriously 4 gigs. It's 116 pages of full color, 600 DPI printable PNGs. I don't need people to necessarily download the whole thing, but I'd like to test it to see if it works (the torrent that is). And if not, I'll go back to the drawing board on that.

What program did you use to create it?

I'm torrenting it mostly as a test of its downloadability, since I don't have a printer capable of handling this without sending my wallet into shock.

I'm using BitTorrent 6.1.2 (build 13422). At this point it seems to be going ahead at a steady 35.5 kB/s from me, and as things continue to grow, it should be in total downloading much faster than that. It'll take several days to actually get a full copy uploaded out there. But I can also keep it seeding for 2 weeks before I leave the country. And I can seed at some rate or another from the US. So maybe 5 or six copies seeding just from me by then, ideally it should be up to a reasonable download speed in a week or two.

It is coming through quite smoothly, and will do better as the number of peers picks up a bit.

I'm getting a steady stream. In some eleven hours, or maybe a day, I'll have it. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

It'll take longer than that, because the top end of it is still only streaming from one computer. Once that bottle neck is passed in about 2 days we'll get people getting the whole thing in a few hours.

I'm mostly getting speeds over 100 kb/s. Unless everyone else jumps on it now that I've said that.

I'm getting speeds of 50+ kb/s, but I might not be able to seed effectively for a while; I've got some travels of my own going on.

I've been seeding for a while. I've downloaded almost 600 MB so far.

Oh, I meant to ask:

How much exposure will this get online, Frank?

I'll leave the torrent up regardless to continue seeding, but I'm curious about your expectations for this.

Hey there. I'll leave it seeding from my end as well. Looks really good. Hopefully I'll figure out a way to get it printed so I can try it out.

Awesome. Thanks.

You will need:
  • 5 standard sheets of cardboard
  • 18 standard sheets of cardstock
  • 44 legal sized sheets of card stock.
  • sticker paper for the board.
My suggestion is to cut out the cards with an exacto knife and a straight edge. And then assemble the decks and use a belt sander on the corners. This will make the deck corners uniform.

No idea.

It's on Pirate Bay (yes, surprisingly most of the stuff on Pirate Bay is totally legal). It's linked on Fantasy Flight, it's linked on Dump Shock. How many people actually want to download it and print it out is something I don't really have a good handle on. It has 864 pieces of flash fiction in it. And yeah, some of them are just jokes or movie references or even song lyrics, but I figure a fair number of people will end up downloading it just to read the cards. I have no way to do market research on that ahead of time - this is literally the first SR board game since DMZ. And since it's torrenting, I have no real way to get a handle on how many people download the whole thing even at final count.

Currently at 560 Megs and have a bunch of friends lined up for the next weekend. I may have to just print in black and white on paper and stuff the cards into opaque sleeves, but it should be fine for playtesting. Hopefully I can get you some feedback in 10ish days.

Yeah, fronting the cards with paper proxies infront of MtG cards works for me.

Not sure I'll actually play this, but I'll see it, at least for a while.

I'm DLing this, maybe it will spark interest in a cyber-punkesque game in my group.
The Gaming Den; where Mathematics are rigorously applied to Mythology.

While everyone's Philosophy is not in accord, that doesn't mean we're not on board.

I would download it (just to read the cards/look at the art - I hate board games, after all), but my lappy seriously lacks the space.

Incidentally, is there any risk of the owners of the Shadowrun IP wetting their pants over this and having their lawyers throw a C&D at you? If so, AWESOME.

Yeah, I was idly curious about that. Everything's free, and Frank's keeping it that way, so I think he's alright, but I'm no IP lawyer.

He might have a fair use case on the copyright front, though that law is so vague that even lawyers are probably hard-pressed to figure it out.

The big worry is probably going to be whether the word Shadowrun is trademarked (which I would assume it is). There's no fair use doctrine when it comes to trademarks.

EDIT: Add a big "AFAIK; I'm not a lawyer" disclaimer.

They can drop a C&D letter on him, but that doesn't mean anything by itself, it's just a threat. I'm not sure what the process of suing someone in Czech Republic from Washington state might be, but it sounds very annoying, and making any kind of punitive case is going to be really hard, since Frank's game is basically free advertising for their products.

They might sue anyway, but it would be because U.S. intprop law is fucked up, and if they don't put up at least a token defense of their trademark it might be invalidated.

Well, it's totally possible to sue from the US to another country. See: the fucked up case of The Pirate Bay. (See also: how it has stopped internet pira-wait a minute.)

But I just realised that this was his cunning plan ALL ALONG!

Think: Frank gets sued. He then gets the best legal defence you possibly can... Keith! Now, for this case, F&K have to be in close proximity and talk a lot, and as a result, they can hammer over RPG ideas while walking the dog, building their defence and so on, and in doing so, the Tome series will be completed!

It's ingenious!

Will DL and seed. Probably never get to play though. Guess I can show my Arkham Horror owning friend. He'll probably enjoy it.

After 23 hours, I've downloaded 75%.

Not as good as I'd hope, not as bad as I was half-expecting.

I'm surprised it's going this fast honestly. When it started up it told me that it was going to take me 2 days to upload a copy. I really don't know how it managed to get some of it done faster than that.
